Course Prerequisites

For individual pre-requisites, you can always co insult the UC Merced Catalog.

Many Writing Studies courses have only WRI 010 as their pre-requisite. The most common ones include:

  • WRI 025 – Introduction to Creative Writing
  • WRI 030 – Introduction to Professional Writing
  • WRI 090 – Intersections of Creative and Professional Writing
  • WRI 100 – Advanced Writing
  • WRI 101 – Writing in the Disciplines: Psychology
  • WRI 104 – Personal Style and Formal Writing
  • WRI 110 – Tutor Training
  • WRI 112 – Writing in the Arts
  • WRI 114 – Environmental Writing
  • WRI 115 – Special Topics in Science Writing
  • WRI 116 – Science Writing in Natural Sciences
  • WRI 117 – Writing for the Social Sciences and Humanities
  • WRI 119 – Writing for Engineering
  • WRI 131A – Journal Production: Technical Writing and Editing

In addition to WRI 010, these courses requires sophomore or greater standing:

  • WRI 105 – Grammar and Style
  • WRI 118 – Management Communication Theory and Practice
  • WRI 120 – Rhetorical Theory

These courses have particular prerequisites:

  • WRI 103 – Research Design and Methods in Writing Studies requires sophomore or greater standing and one other upper division WRI course.
  • WRI 122 – Special Topics in Rhetoric requires WRI 010 and one of the upper division WRI courses offered.

These creative writing courses are sequenced courses that have nested pre-requisites:

  • WRI 125 series courses, including topics in Poetry, Fiction, Creative Nonfiction, and Drama, require WRI 25 and WRI 90 OR WRI 25 and WRI 30. Note that you can take any of these courses more than once for credit.
  • WRI 150 – Seminar in Creative Writing requires having taken one of the WRI 125 series courses. You can repeat seminars for credit.
  • These professional writing courses are sequenced courses with nested pre-requisites:
  • WRI 130 – Topics in Professional Writing requires WRI 30 and WRI 90 OR WRI 25 and WRI 30. You can repeat the course for credit.
  • WRI 155 – Seminar in Professional Writing requires having taken WRI 130. You can take a seminar more than once for credit.
  • To enroll in WRI 131B – Journal Production: Vernal Pool, you can co-enroll in WRI 131A (Journal Production: Technical Writing and Editing) or take it ahead of time.
  • Similarly, to enroll in WRI 131C – Journal Production: Undergraduate Research Journal, you can co-enroll in WRI 131A (Journal Production: Technical Writing and Editing) or take it ahead of time.
